Deja Vu Yellowtail Bite at the Box

Hi All! I was out at the box canyon again targeting wahoo.  This time, I had beautiful 4 to 5 inch sardines to add to my arsenal. It was a beautiful morning with calm 1 to 2 foot swells coming from the northwest, water temp at 68.

After trolling for an hour or so, I fly-lined a lively sardine on a lone paddy with fish marks at the 75 to 100 feet, but no luck. So further south I went…and went…and went. My trip meter indicated 20 miles south of Dana Point.  The water temp reached 69/70 but no paddies in site.  This is when your sonar becomes your best friend for structure and bait balls. I dropped a Sumo iron to the bottom and hook a nice Red, then another. Shortly after, I’m hooked with a heavy head shake reminiscent of my last week’s hook up . Unfortunately, the line goes limp…Dang! Not deterred, I dropped my iron again, but this time with a violent jig strike….another fat yellow? You bet!

I caught this nice 18 lb yellowtail and 2 keeper red rock fish with 40 lb P-line, my trini 30, and Calstar 20-40 Grafighter stick, all on the yo yo, blue and white sumo iron. Heck, I only used 2 piece of live bait this trip, but I ain't complaining. See you out on the water! Ben
