Huge Molas & Bonitas at the Box Canyon - Dec 20, 2014
« on: December 24, 2014, 03:02:07 PM »
Hi All!
I was out last Saturday looking for yellows again down at the box. The water temp is getting colder towards San Onofre, 65. The weather forecast was spot on….cold and rough, 2-3 foot westward swells with wind waves in the morning calming down in the afternoon. There were a hand full of PBer and a couple CB working the area this day. I didn't see any bent rods and the VHF was crickets all day, but the bonita bite was ON....great sign that the yellows are in the area. I nailed 3 big bonies early morning all roughly round 11 to 12 pounds. The big ones fight hard….thought I hooked a yellow for a moment or two until you feel the distinct bonito vibration. Plenty of paddies today, but all the yellows were deep, 200”. I hooked one nice yellow, but farmed em about 10 minutes in. Little did I know this was my only shot today...Darn!

On a different note, I was able to get some nice underwater footage of a huge mola mola (Sun fish). I’m always a bit wary coming close to these docile creatures because of my close encounter with a gigantic airborne Mako preying on molas earlier this summer...crazy!!!

I caught 7 to 8 big bonitas and 9-10 rock fish, all released. All were caught on the yoyo scramble egg & white/blue sumo iron...no action on bait this time. The yellows are still around, after conversing with a PBer at the landing who caught 2, but they're getting harder to find. I didn't bag a yellow this time, but it was semi-entertaining pulling on big bonies. There's always tomorrow!

See you out on the water ;) Ben

Nice!... Sorry I've been absent. Stupid work and stuff.

Ski goes in to the tank guy this week to examine the possibilities of a larger forward aluminum tank. I want to make it as large as possible without having to do any fiberglass damage/repair. I will call on the engine tomorrow but it should be back in the next week or so. Then I might have a day or so to fish and then I'm going to drop it off at Pacific Yacht Towers for the custom front tower/windshield/T-top/Lightbar/New Electronics. I want the entire front and rear tower 100% done by April.

All I'm looking for still is a good fiberglass repair guy. So if anyone knows somebody that isn't going to charge me an arm and a leg....

Are you able to catch/keep sunfish?  I almost hooked one last summer.

Hey Mike...I'm pretty sure you can keep em. I even read that it's considerated a delicacy in some asian countries. This sunfish was about 200 lbs plus...not sure I'd wanna deal with that. Plus, I had a mako encounter preying on a school of molas last summer...a gigantic mako shot vertically out of the water just a hundred yards away from me off of clemente. Freaked the heck out of me...I don't like to be around both after that! If you look closer to these mola pics, you'll see big bite marks....mako bites maybe? Ben
