Mahi Mahi Frenzy, San Clemente 8-21-2015
« on: August 22, 2015, 05:50:25 PM »

The dodos are still around and they’re getting bigger! Friday, I made a last minute decision for the dodos & tuna. The week days at Dana Point landing is starting to feel like a weekend. The bait line was a record high this time…1 ˝ hr wait mainly due to the receiver running out of bait (I’m too lazy to make my own). But the sardines/macs were lively. The plan was to head out towards the 267 FB for paddies & boils. It was a rough ride ALL DAY…10-15 knot W winds combo big swells & heavy chop, water 74.

With a late start, I was hoping to find em closer. At the 10 mile mark, birds were hovering over a nice paddy with one boat working it. Lots of bait in the water and small turquois fins are visible from the surface. I soaked a sardine on first drift and started to cut chum then my reel clicker rips, Airborne Dorado On! The dodo’s buddies followed and I hollered to the boaters next to me, “Get ready!”. Everyone hooked up & another beautiful mahi on the ski!

The bite shut down after the frenzy & the guys at the 267 are saying the same on the VHF.  South bound, I spotted birds on top of a large, fast, migrating boil and the chase was on. It was difficult to determine if the boil was tuna or bonitos…it didn’t have the classic “tails in the air” I often see with tuna.  I thew irons, bait slide and jig & bait troll but couldn’t trigger the bite…this went on for miles. I was getting pretty beat up from all the wind waves and broke away from the pursuit.

I caught this nice dorado on 30 lb p-line, Trinidad 20, and my Calstar 12-30 scs stick. I forgot my scale but this dodo was bigger than my last 17 lber. The yellowfins are further out…a boater almost caught limits at the 209 FB, 15-25 lbers. Bartering tuna for dorado was offered but I declined.

No tuna today but a nice mahi will always make my day. Fish tacos for family & friends tonight!

Thanks for coming along ;) Ben
